What You'll Build in This Tutorial

By the end of this guide, you'll have an automated social media system that posts for you, every week, without you having to log in to Facebook or Instagram daily. Here's exactly what you'll set up:

What you'll set upTimeToolCost
Buffer account + 3 channels connected15 minBufferFree
Posting schedule (days + times)5 minBufferFree

Before we start: "Auto-posting" just means you write posts in advance and tell a tool when to publish them. The tool connects to Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms using official (approved) connections. It's completely safe and doesn't hurt your reach.

6 Steps to Your First Automated Month

1
⏱ 10 minutes

Create a free Buffer account

Go to buffer.com and click "Get started free." Sign up with your email, no credit card required. Buffer's free plan gives you 3 social media channels and 10 queued posts per channel. That's enough to run this whole system at zero cost.

Tip: Use your business email when signing up. It keeps your business and personal accounts separate, and Buffer may occasionally send tips and updates you'll want to see.

⏱ 10 minutes

Connect your social media channels

Once you're in Buffer, click "Connect a channel." You'll see icons for Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, and more. The free plan allows 3 channels, most local businesses start with Facebook Page, Instagram Business, and Google Business Profile.

How connecting works: Buffer asks you to log in to each social media account and grant permission. You're not giving Buffer your password, you're giving it an official connection through Facebook's and Google's own systems. It's the same process as logging in with Google on other websites.

Important: To connect Instagram, you need an Instagram Business or Creator account (not personal). To switch: go to your Instagram profile → Settings → Account → Switch to Professional Account. It's free and takes 2 minutes.

Set your posting schedule

In Buffer, click on each connected channel, then "Posting Schedule." Set the days and times you want posts to go out. Buffer will suggest times based on when your audience is most active, you can accept these or customize them.

DayRecommended timePost type
Tuesday9:00 AM local timeEducational / tip
Thursday6:30 PM local timeBefore/after or social proof
Saturday10:00 AM local timeOffer or call-to-action
Start simple: 3 posts per week is better than trying to post every day and burning out. You can always add more slots later once the habit is built.

Write your first week of posts

Click "New Post" in Buffer. Write your caption, add an image (or use Buffer's built-in Canva integration to create one), and click "Add to Queue." Buffer will automatically slot it into your next available schedule time.

For your first week, write 3 posts using this simple rotation:

Post 1, Tuesday: Helpful Tip
Did you know [quick useful fact about your industry]?

Most [customers/clients/patients] don't realize [helpful insight].

[Explain it simply in 2–3 sentences]

What questions do you have about [your service]? Drop them below 👇

[Your business name] | [city]

Post 2, Thursday: Social Proof
"[Real customer quote or testimonial]", [First name], [City]

[One sentence about what you did for them]

Batch-create 3 more weeks (the fast way)

Here's where you save the most time. Instead of writing posts one by one, use ChatGPT to generate captions in bulk. Open chat.openai.com and use this prompt:

ChatGPT Batch Caption Prompt
I run a [type of business] in [city]. My customers are [brief description].

Write me 9 social media captions, 3 educational tips, 3 social proof posts, and 3 calls-to-action. Each caption should be 3–5 sentences, friendly and local-feeling, and end with a relevant hashtag.

Keep the language simple, like a trusted neighbor, not a sales pitch.

Business name: [your name]
Services: [list your main services]
City/area: [your location]

ChatGPT will generate 9 captions you can paste into Buffer. Add photos, adjust any details, and queue them all up. That's your next 3 weeks done in one session.

Pro tip: Save the ChatGPT prompt in a Notes app on your phone. Every month, run it again with a slight variation ("this time focus on seasonal topics" or "include a story about a recent customer") for fresh content without starting from scratch.

Review and activate

In Buffer, click "Queue" to see all your scheduled posts in a timeline. Check: does each post have an image? Does it end with a hashtag? Does the call-to-action make sense? Make any tweaks, then close your laptop. Buffer will post everything on schedule.

You'll get an email notification if anything fails to post (rare, but it happens if your Instagram connection expires). Otherwise, your social media is running on autopilot for the next month.

📍 Real Result, Salon Owner, Austin TX

From posting once a week (when she remembered) to consistent daily presence

Sofia Reyes owned a hair salon and knew she needed to post consistently to keep clients coming back, but between cutting hair and running the business, posting on Instagram felt like one more thing she'd forget. She spent one Sunday afternoon setting up Buffer and batching her next month of content using the ChatGPT method above.

"I used to post maybe once a week, when I had time. Now posts go out three times a week without me doing anything. I got two new clients last month who said they found me from a post Buffer published while I was in the middle of a color treatment."

Common Questions

Does auto-posting hurt your reach on Instagram or Facebook?

No. Meta and Instagram officially support third-party schedulers. Buffer uses the official API. Scheduled posts perform the same as manual posts, what matters is content quality and posting time, not the method.

How many social media posts should a local business publish per week?

3–5 posts per week per platform is the sweet spot for most local businesses. That's enough to stay visible without overwhelming your audience. Quality beats quantity, 3 helpful posts outperform 7 filler posts every time.

What's the best time to post on social media for local businesses?

For most local businesses: Tuesday–Thursday at 9–11 AM or 6–8 PM local time. Avoid Monday mornings and Sunday afternoons. Buffer will show you your account's best times once you have 2+ weeks of posting data.

Do I need to add images to every post?

On Facebook and LinkedIn, text-only posts can do well. On Instagram, you always need an image or video. For most local businesses, using one strong photo per post (a job photo, before/after, or even a professional photo of your space) is enough to get started.
