Set up your services and pricing

Log into Acuity and navigate to Appointment Types. Click "Add a New Type" for each service you offer. For each service, fill in:

  • Name, e.g. "Women's Haircut", "Full Colour + Blowdry", "Brow Tint"
  • Duration, How long the service actually takes (be realistic; you'll add buffer time separately)
  • Price, What clients pay
  • Description, A sentence about what's included so clients know exactly what they're booking
  • Padding time, Set 15 min "after" padding so you have cleanup time between clients

Configure your availability

In Acuity, go to Availability → Set Your Weekly Hours. Block your working days and hours. Then:

  • Set your lunch break as "blocked" time each day
  • Add any recurring days off (if you always take Mondays, mark them unavailable)
  • Use the "Limits" setting to cap how many appointments per day you'll accept, prevents burning out by taking 9 back-to-back clients

For time off, vacations, or one-off blocked days, use Block Off Time in the calendar view. Clients will automatically see you as unavailable during those periods, no explaining needed.

⚠️ Common mistake

Don't set your availability to match your exact working hours without padding at the start and end. Leave 15 minutes before your first appointment so you're never rushed opening up, and 15 minutes after your last for cleanup.

Turn on automated confirmations and reminders

This is the most valuable step. Automated reminders reduce no-shows by 30–50% for most salons. Go to Client Emails & Texts → Reminders in Acuity and set:

  1. Instant confirmation, Send immediately after booking with appointment details, your address, and parking info
  2. 48-hour reminder, Email + SMS the day before with a "reply to confirm or reschedule" message
  3. 2-hour reminder, Final SMS the morning of (clients check their phones more than email)

For SMS reminders you'll need Acuity's Growing tier ($27/mo) or above. It's worth it, most clients respond far better to texts than emails.

💡 What to write in your reminder

Keep it warm and brief: "Hi [name]! Quick reminder: you're booked for [service] tomorrow at [time] at [Salon Name]. Reply CONFIRM or click here to reschedule: [link]." That's all you need.

Add an intake form (optional but powerful)

Acuity lets you attach a custom form to any appointment type. For a salon this is gold, ask new clients:

  • What's the main thing you'd like to change about your hair?
  • Any colour services or chemical treatments in the last 6 months?
  • Upload a photo of your inspiration style (yes, Acuity supports this)
  • Any allergies or sensitivities we should know about?

Publish your booking link everywhere

Your booking page is live, now put it where clients already look for you:

  • Instagram bio, Replace your generic link with your Acuity booking URL. Or use a link-in-bio tool and add "Book Now" as the top button.
  • Google Business Profile, Go to your Google profile → Edit → Add booking link. Clients see a "Book" button right on Google Search and Maps.
  • Facebook page, Add a "Book Now" button to your Facebook page header.

Enable the waitlist for fully-booked days

Enable Acuity's waitlist feature so when a cancellation happens, the next person in line gets an automatic notification. This fills cancelled slots without you lifting a finger. Go to Business Settings → Waitlist and toggle it on. Clients can add themselves to the waitlist when booking, they'll be notified automatically when a slot opens.
