Before & After: What Changes When You Automate

❌ Without Automation
  • Post sporadically, nothing for weeks
  • Stare at phone wondering what to write
  • Forget to post during busy season
  • Zero social presence = new customers doubt you're real
  • Competitors get the "looks active" trust boost
✓ With Automation
  • 3 posts per week, every week, without thinking
  • 30 days of content written in 20 minutes with AI
  • Posts go out even when you're on a job
  • Professional presence builds trust with neighbors
  • Your Google Business profile shows fresh activity

Step-by-Step Setup

1

Set Up Buffer and Connect Your Channels

Go to buffer.com and create a free account. Connect your Facebook Business Page, Instagram Business profile, and Google Business Profile. Buffer will ask you to authorize each, this takes about 5 minutes total. On the free plan you can connect 3 channels and schedule 10 posts per channel.

2

Set Your Posting Schedule

In Buffer, go to Settings → Posting Schedule. For most plumbers, 3 posts per week is ideal: Monday (start the week), Wednesday (mid-week value), Friday (end-of-week promotion or behind-the-scenes). Set posting times to 7am or 6pm when homeowners are checking their phones. Buffer will auto-fill your queue with these slots.

3

Use ChatGPT to Write a Month of Captions

Open ChatGPT and use the prompt below. You'll get 12+ captions in under 2 minutes. Copy, tweak slightly, paste into Buffer.

🤖 Copy-Paste ChatGPT Prompt

You are a social media manager for [YOUR COMPANY NAME], a local plumbing business in [YOUR CITY]. Write 12 social media captions for the next month. Include a mix of: before/after job descriptions (2-3), practical plumbing tips homeowners can use (3-4), seasonal reminders like "winterize your pipes" or "spring water heater check" (2-3), and one promotional post. Keep each caption under 150 words. Write in a friendly, neighborly tone, not corporate. Use 3-5 relevant hashtags per post. Don't use emojis excessively.
4

Take Before & After Photos on Every Job

This is the single highest-performing content type for trades businesses. Before you start a job, take 2 photos of the problem. After you finish, take 2 photos of the fix. You don't need professional equipment, your phone is fine. Pair these photos with a simple caption: "Leaky shutoff valve under the kitchen sink. 45-minute fix. The homeowner had been dealing with this drip for 6 months. Don't let a small problem become a big one, call us."

Schedule Your First Month in Buffer

Open Buffer → Create Post. Paste your caption, attach your photo (if you have one), and click Add to Queue. Do this for all 12 posts. Buffer will automatically space them out across your Mon/Wed/Fri schedule. Then close your laptop and go fix pipes, your social media is handled for the next month.

Your 4 Content Buckets (Never Run Out of Ideas)

Every plumbing business post fits into one of these four buckets. Rotate through them and you'll never stare at a blank screen again.

Bucket 1: Before & After
Before: A slow drain that had been backing up for weeks in a Riverside home. After: Clean trap, clear pipes, happy homeowner, and they can finally use the sink without dreading it. 📍 [YOUR CITY] · [YOUR BUSINESS NAME] #PlumberLife #PlumbingFix #LocalPlumber #[YourCity]Plumber
💡 Tip: Take photos on every job. You'll have 20+ posts by the end of the month without writing a word.
Bucket 2: Helpful Tips
Your water heater should be flushed once a year. Most homeowners have never done it, and neither have most plumbers when they're hired to "fix" a unit that just needed maintenance. Here's what happens when sediment builds up: higher energy bills, weird noises, and eventually an early breakdown. We offer water heater flushes for $89. Worth it. #WaterHeaterMaintenance #PlumbingTips #HomeOwnerTips
💡 Tip: One educational tip per week builds trust better than any ad.
Bucket 3: Seasonal Reminders
Reminder for [YOUR CITY] homeowners: temperatures are dropping this week. If you have outdoor spigots or pipes running through unheated spaces, now is the time to winterize. A burst pipe can cause $5,000-$25,000 in water damage. A $150 winterization service prevents all of it. Call us this week, spots are filling up. #PipeWinterization #WinterPlumbing #PreventBurstPipes
💡 Tip: Seasonal posts drive real calls. Post them 2-3 weeks before the season changes.
Bucket 4: Behind the Scenes
Early mornings are the best part of this job. Before 7am, the city is quiet, the van is packed, and we're already solving someone's problem before they even wake up. 16 years doing this, and it still doesn't feel like "work." 🔧 [YOUR BUSINESS NAME], [YOUR CITY]'s neighborhood plumber. #SmallBusiness #Plumber #LocalBusiness #TradesLife
💡 Tip: Human content gets 3-5x more organic reach than promotional posts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should plumbers be on social media?
Yes, but not for vanity reasons. 97% of consumers search online for local services, and an active social media presence increases trust and visibility. You don't need thousands of followers. You need your neighbors to see you're active and legit when they're deciding who to call.
What should a plumber post on social media?
The four content types that work best: (1) Before/after photos of completed jobs, these get the most engagement, (2) Quick tips like "What to do when your pipe bursts at 2am", (3) Seasonal promotions and reminders, and (4) Behind-the-scenes content showing your team and trucks. The 80/20 rule: 80% helpful, 20% promotional.
Is Buffer free for plumbers?
Yes, Buffer's free plan lets you connect 3 social channels and schedule up to 10 posts per channel at once. That's plenty for most plumbing businesses. Paid plans start at $6/month per channel and add analytics and unlimited scheduling.
How much time should a plumber spend on social media?
With automation, 30-45 minutes per month. Here's the formula: spend 20 minutes generating captions with ChatGPT, 10 minutes finding or taking photos, and 15 minutes scheduling them in Buffer. Then forget about it until next month.
