Claim and Optimize Your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (formerly "Google My Business") is the free listing that shows up when people search for cleaning services in your area. If you haven't claimed yours yet, go to business.google.com and search for your business. If it's already there, claim it. If not, create it.
Once you've claimed it, make sure these sections are completely filled out, Google ranks complete profiles much higher:
- Business name: Your exact business name (no extra keywords stuffed in)
- Category: "House Cleaning Service" or "Commercial Cleaning Service"
- Address or service area: List all the zip codes or neighborhoods you serve
- Phone number: Your main business number
- Hours: Accurate business hours (update for holidays)
- Photos: Add at least 10 photos, before/afters, team photos, equipment. Profiles with photos get 42% more direction requests.
- Description: Write 2–3 sentences about your services, years in business, and what makes you different

Your dashboard shows completeness indicators. Aim for 100% completion before moving to step 2.
2
Get Your Direct Review Link
A direct review link takes someone straight to your review box, no searching, no clicking around. This doubles the number of people who actually complete the review because you've removed all the friction.
Here's how to get your link:
- Go to your Google Business Profile dashboard at business.google.com
- Click "Ask for reviews" in the left sidebar
- Copy the short link Google generates for you
- Test it on your phone to confirm it works
Once you have the link, shorten it with a free link shortener like bit.ly or create a memorable redirect like "yourbusiness.com/review." Save this link, you'll use it in every script in Step 4.
💡 Pro Tip: Create a Review QR Code
Go to qr-code-generator.com, paste your review link, and download the QR code as an image. Print it on a business card and leave one at every job. Clients can scan it right when they see the clean result and the emotion is fresh. This alone adds 3–5 reviews per month.
3
Time Your Review Request Right
Timing is everything with review requests. Ask at the right moment and you'll get a 5-star review. Ask at the wrong moment and you'll get ignored or, worse, a 3-star review from a client who was already frustrated.
Best Times to Ask
- 2–4 hours after the clean is complete
- When the client first sees the clean result
- After a client says "it looks amazing"
- After you've resolved a concern well
- With recurring clients after their 3rd clean
Times to Avoid
- While the team is still cleaning
- Immediately after a complaint or issue
- More than 48 hours after the clean
- Multiple times to the same client
- Right before or after a price increase
The sweet spot is 2–4 hours after a clean. The home looks and smells amazing, the client is in a great mood, and the experience is fresh. A text message at this moment gets a 30–40% response rate. An email gets about 15%. Both are excellent.

Use These 3 Proven Review Request Scripts
Copy these scripts exactly, they're tested and work. Swap in your business name and review link.
Script A, SMS (Best Response Rate)
Hi [First Name]! It's [Your Name] from [Business Name]. We just finished your clean and hope it looks great! 😊 If you have 60 seconds, a Google review means the world to our small team: [YOUR REVIEW LINK]
No pressure at all, just grateful for your support!
Script B, Email (Best for Clients with No Phone Number)
Subject: How did your clean go today?
Hi [First Name],
We hope you came home to a space that feels really good!
We put a lot of care into every job, and we'd love to hear how we did. If you have 60 seconds, a Google review makes a huge difference for a local business like ours:
👉 [YOUR REVIEW LINK]
Thank you so much for choosing [Business Name].
— [Your Name]
Script C, In Person (For When You're On-Site at the End)
[After showing the client the result and getting a positive reaction]
"I'm so glad you're happy with it! If you have a moment later, we'd really appreciate a quick Google review, it helps other homeowners find us and means a lot to our small team. I'll text you a link right now so you have it."
[Then send Script A immediately via text]
🚫 What NOT to Say
Never say "leave us a 5-star review" or "only leave a review if you're happy." Google can penalize you for incentivized or gated reviews. Just ask honestly for honest feedback. Your 4.8-star average built from genuine reviews is worth more than a 5.0 average from 6 reviews that look suspicious.
5
Automate Review Requests with Zapier or Podium
Once you're comfortable with the scripts, automate the whole process so review requests go out automatically 4 hours after every completed booking, without you having to remember to send them.
Option A: Zapier (Free), If you use Calendly, Jobber, or another booking tool, use Zapier to automatically send a Gmail when a booking is marked "completed." See our full Zapier tutorial for the step-by-step setup.
Option B: Podium (Paid, $249/mo), Podium is a dedicated review management platform for service businesses. It sends automated SMS review requests, lets you respond to all your reviews in one place, and tracks your review performance over time. Worth it once you're doing 50+ jobs per month.

Common Questions
What if a client leaves a negative review?
Respond within 48 hours, professionally and calmly. Acknowledge their experience, apologize for falling short, and invite them to contact you directly. Future clients who read negative reviews pay more attention to how you respond than to the review itself. A calm, professional response to a 2-star review can actually win you new clients.
Can I ask clients to edit their old reviews?
You can ask, if a client left a 3-star review and you've since resolved the issue, you can reach out and let them know the situation has been fixed. Some will update the review. Don't pressure anyone, and only reach out once. Never offer discounts or gifts in exchange for review changes, that violates Google's policies.
How many reviews do I need before I start showing up in local search?
In most markets, 25–50 reviews with a 4.5+ average is enough to appear in Google's "local pack" (the 3 businesses that show at the top of local searches). In highly competitive cities, you may need 100+. Keep collecting, more is always better, and recency matters too. Recent reviews signal to Google that you're active.
